Contention, a PR’s dream! Contention in the Google contest!
In the original post about the contest, John said….

In order to qualify, the page must have a link back to the v7n home page. Participants who don’t maintain a link to the v7n home page will be disqualified. (We are not specifying the type of link - that’s entirely at your discretion.)

Then in the same thread, the link can be JavaScript. Or it can have a nofollow attribute. It just has to be human-clickable.
But, some people didn’t even read the complete post.

I also think it is pretty lame to use a contest like this just to build links to your own site. And I also know that there are a lot of great SEO’s who might consider participating, but they aren’t interested in helping V7N out.

and made his own $1,000 contest…..REQUIRING A LINK TO ANOTHER SITE, Matt Cutts Blog!! HYPOCRITE!!
Then in the comments of his blog, he posted…

Yes Jane, that’s what I’m proposing. The original contest is being run for the benefit of the person running the contest. My contest is being run for the benefit of someone else. Think of it as ironic SEO charity.

Looks like v7n may be ready to pay out $1,800 for a hefty amount of incoming links which would regularly run double to triple the amount - one could consider the contest paid link baiting:
* v7n hopes to build its PageRank above its current ranking of 5
* incoming link PR trickles to its Seven Seek web directory, which may also benefit

HOW can you increase PR or back-links if you use JavaScript or no follow??!!!!

There is nothing on the contest page that says contestants can use a no follow link for entering the contest. On the contrary, your post states that “We are not specifying the type of link - that’s entirely at your discretion.”

Duh….John said you can link to his site any way you want… You mean you can’t do no follow links…er…..!!!!

Point is that you should add that Java info to your main post to clear up the controversy.

Like I said, this is smart link baiting.

What part of (We are not specifying the type of link - that’s entirely at your discretion.) don’t you understand! One more thing, for the nigritude ultramarine contest, you had to be a member of SearchGuild.com, AND have a logo for DarkBlue.com to enter.
With this contest you don’t even have to be a member at John’s boards!
So, what did all this contention generate??!! A lot more publicity, and prize money!!! $10,200 total….so far…if it’s possible to enter both versions of the contest!! And John says he wants to change the rules so you can win all of it. John wanted to release a Press Release on January first, and what’s causing the delay?? New prizes keep getting added!
